Um, *my* journal, thanks.

So there's a "gay rights" meme going around.

I believe strongly in gay rights; anyone who's read my journal for more than a few months already knows this. I believe gay couples should be permitted to marry, in every state of the union, with all social and legal rights straight couples have.

But I bitterly resent any LJ meme that claims "If you don't repeat this meme, you're opposed to gay rights." And that's what the initial wording of the meme implies.

So no. I'm not putting your topic heading in my subject line, I'm not reposting your meme, and I'm not asking anyone else to do so. You want to ask for my participation in a meme? Ask. You want to demand it, and make assumptions about my beliefs based on my reply? Bite me.

So, wait. If you bite me, does that mean I become a weregay on nights of the full moon? ;-)

Could be, rabbit...I mean, mouse.

Well...

I guess as long as we make certain my three days of gaydom sync up with the other monthly cycle in the household, everyone wins. :-D

(And with that single comment, I believe I've reached my "Tackiness Quota" for the week.)

You nailed what was bothering me about it.

Well, I posted (and it might be that my post led to this post of yours) because I'm sick and tired of having this pointless debate turned into a weapon of mass distraction so that elections can be about something other than how good a leader the candidate is. I felt a *little* bit of pressure from the confrontational tone, but I decided that I felt strongly enough about gay rights that I didn't care.

If *my* post has led, directly or indirectly, to generating this reaction in you, I apologize. I didn't mean to be a source of stress for anyone. As much as I believe in gay rights, I believe that free will is more important.

No worries. You have nothing to apologize for. I don't begrudge anyone their preferred method of speaking out on this issue. And it's definitely an issue of importance, and one that's been terribly misused in politics.

It's the originator of the meme, who chose to word it in such a confrontational and binary fashion, that I take issue with--not anyone else who chose to post it.

Well, to clarify that *I* don't espouse the "do it or you suck" attitude, I've amended the quoted meme on my post.

If you don't shoot yourself in the face, you support guns for babies!

It's a complete logical fallacy. I don't remember the name of this specific one, though.

I would just like to say I support what you say. I have not put it up either...admittedly, I had not heard of it until just now ;-)

It puts me in mind of a chain letter threat. "If u dont repeat this mem, youll get a horable skin disease and a car will ran over u....... its true it happend to a man in arizonna!!!!!!!!" Which makes me think a teenager wrote it.

I believe gay couples should be permitted to marry, in every state of the union

So you don't think non-American gay couples should be allowed to marry??? ;)

I somehow manage to avoid all the memes, which is fine with me. Strangely, the first thing that came to mind when I read about this was conservatives and liberals fighting about the "flag lapel pin". That's a bit ironic, I think.

Along the same lines

I put that with along the same lines as those emails that you get that state "You must send this to everyone you know to let them know you're their friend! and if I don't get it back, I'll assume you don't think I'm your friend ;_;" With any of those, if you actually know the person posting/sending it, I find them to be quite unnecessary.
