Trumpets and Fanfare
Some weeks (months?) ago, I mentioned that I had majorly huge ginormous news that I was sitting on.

I don't have to sit on it anymore.

I just sold an original novel to Wizards of the Coast's "Discoveries" line.

"But Ari, while that's cool and all, haven't you already done a novel for WotC?"

Why, yes, I have. But the Ravenloft novel was work-for-hire. This? This is an honest-to-God sale, a completely original novel sold to a publisher. It is not work-for-hire. It is not a D&D or shared-world novel. While it happens to be published via the same company that does D&D, it is not in any way, shape, or form RPG-related.

In other words, it's a "real" fantasy novel, even by the standards of those who (for whatever reason) look down on shared-world fiction.

And it's a done deal. :-)

Look for Shades of Grey, on shelves--and alphabetized under "M," not in the D&D section--as of September of '08. :-D

Congrats, Ari!!

Hmm...I can tell I've been with the Monkey King for a LONG time, 'cause I had EXACTLY the same thought upon reading this -- M for Mouseferatu.

Very, very cool news indeed. You should be proud and I can't wait to see the book.

I trust, once you're able to, you'll hype it a lot and tell us all about it, too.

Very cool, it must feel nice, creating something that's all your own.

Fantastic news! I am good-naturedly jealous as hell. :)

Congratulations. I know you were going through a long stretch of pain. Hopefully this is a nice confirmation that you were right to keep plugging away.

Excellent! That's really great news.

When Courtney Marabetta mentioned their Open Call on her latest blog entry, I happened to have just been thinking of writing a novel - I wonder if I can get it finished for the February deadline?

So what's Shades of Grey about? This is the Ravenloft novel right?

Nope. The Ravenloft novel is Black Crusade. This is, as I said, entirely original.

They'd prefer I not talk too much about the content of Shades this early in the process, but I'll go into it as soon as I can.

So is it a D&D novel or a swords and sorcery novel?

Fantasy. Traditional swords and sorcery in some respects, but very untraditional in others.

And as I said in the entry, completely unrelated to D&D at all. 100% mine. :-)

What is the 'Discoveries' line?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]mouseferatu
2007-09-19 07:18 pm UTC (link)
Essentially, "Discoveries" is WotC's non-D&D/shared world line. It tends to focus primarily on things like modern fantasy, horror, contemporary sci-fi, historical fiction, and the like. For the most part, they're avoiding traditional fantasy in Discoveries, since all the D&D lines are (more or less) traditional fantasy. However, as Shades of Grey proves, that's not a hard-and-fast rule, if something takes an approach to fantasy that's different enough from the D&D material.

Hats off, and all that jazz.
